What it was really like working as a web designer in Colchester
Hi, I’m Bry, founder of Hi This Is Bry. I’m a multi award winning Creative Strategist and Brand Consultant helping people build award worthy brands and make them visible. I write about branding, marketing, visibility and consumer behaviour, breaking down why recognisable brands succeed, why people buy and what you can apply to what you’re building.
I didn't plan for Colchester to become such a big part of my story. But when I look back at how I got to where I am now, so much of it traces back to this city and the people I met while I was here.
I spent a chunk of my early career working in and around Colchester as a brand designer and web designer, and it genuinely shaped how I think about design, business, and the people I want to work with.

Where it started, agency life and real world design
My first proper taste of client work came through working with several Essex based design and marketing agencies, where I got to work across a real mix of projects. That included websites, visual identities and content for independent businesses that wanted their brand to actually mean something.
What struck me pretty quickly was how many small businesses knew what they wanted to say but struggled to communicate it visually. They understood their own service because they lived and breathed it every day, but somebody discovering the business for the first time did not have that same context.
The work was never just making things look good. It involved helping people communicate more clearly, build trust faster and feel confident about what customers saw when they looked them up online.
That's still the lens I bring to projects through my branding and marketing services now.
The people that made it, networking and community
One of the things I loved most about being based in Colchester was the business community. I co ran the Ambitious Women in Essex networking group during that time, which introduced me to some genuinely brilliant people and led to collaborations that pushed me creatively.
Being around people who were building businesses from scratch also taught me a lot about what useful creative support actually looks like.
Business owners rarely walked into a room saying they needed improved brand positioning or a better website user journey. They would talk about struggling to explain what they did, feeling embarrassed to send somebody to their website or knowing their business had moved on while the branding still looked like something they made several years earlier.
A lot of my understanding of what small businesses really need came from those conversations rather than a textbook.

Working with Essex County Council
Alongside the agency work, I also supported the Business Growth Team at Essex County Council on projects across Colchester and the wider Essex area.
It was a different kind of work, but it gave me a much broader picture of the challenges businesses face at different stages and what useful creative support looks like in practice.
I still think about that when I'm scoping projects now. Before deciding what needs designing, I want to understand what the business actually needs at that point.
Sometimes an established business already has plenty worth keeping and needs a refresh rather than starting again. Sometimes the offer is clear but the website does not communicate it properly. Other businesses need much deeper strategic work before touching the visuals at all.
That thinking is one of the reasons I now offer different levels of creative services, rather than assuming every client needs a complete rebrand or a brand new website.
Projects that stuck with me as a web designer in Colchester
Some of the work I'm proudest of from that period includes designing web platforms and brand identities for local businesses from scratch, helping established companies refresh their look without losing what made them recognisable and supporting community events and campaigns where the design needed to do quite a lot on a small budget.
Those projects also made me much more interested in the thinking behind a website. A website has to look credible, but somebody also needs to understand where to go, what the business offers and why they should trust it. That eventually became a much bigger part of how I approach my website design and strategy services.
The same applies to branding. A visual identity has to work beyond the logo file. It needs to make sense on the website, social media, marketing materials and whatever else the business creates afterwards.

Still working with Colchester businesses
I moved back to Manningtree a while ago, but Colchester is still very much part of my client base and, honestly, it's a short trip.
I still meet clients in person there, and some of my longest standing working relationships started in the city. My work has since grown to include clients in Chelmsford, Ipswich, London, Suffolk and further across the UK, but Colchester is where a lot of the foundation was laid.
The work has grown too. I now support businesses with branding, websites, business strategy, launches and ongoing marketing, depending on what is actually getting in the way.
For somebody who already has decent branding but knows it needs strengthening, that might mean my Brand Clarity Report and Refresh. For another business it could mean a complete website build, while some projects start much earlier with questions around the business itself.
I'm proud that Colchester is still part of that work, even when plenty of the people I work with now are nowhere near Essex.
FAQs
Do you still work with businesses in Colchester? Yes, absolutely. Even though I'm now based in Manningtree, I regularly work with clients in Colchester and across Essex, either remotely or in person.
Should I work with an independent designer or a Colchester web design agency? It depends on what you need. Agencies often have larger teams, while working with an independent designer can mean one consistent person understands the project from the initial strategy through to the final branding or website. I work across both branding and website design, so those decisions can be considered together where a project needs both.
Do you only work with businesses in Essex? No. Colchester and Essex are still important parts of my client base, but I work remotely with businesses across the UK as well.
Do you offer both branding and website design? Yes. I offer separate branding services and website services, with different levels of support depending on whether you need a refresh, new foundations or deeper strategic work.
Where can I find your prices? My current offers and prices are listed on my Creative Services page, so you can see the options before enquiring.
Colchester still influences how I work now
Colchester gave me a lot of the practical experience that shaped how I work today. The projects mattered, but so did meeting small business owners and hearing what they were actually struggling with when they tried to market and grow their businesses.
That experience is still there when I'm looking at a client's brand now, planning how somebody should move through a website or deciding whether a business genuinely needs to start again.
